Is "Buy 3 Tyres, Get the 4th Free" Actually a Deal?

"3 for 4" Tyre Deals in Blacktown: What They Really Cost | Goodyear Blacktown

You've seen the signs. Buy three tyres, get the fourth free. 4 for the price of 3. It sounds like a no-brainer. A whole tyre, gone from the bill.

Before you book it in anywhere, it's worth knowing how these deals are built. Because sometimes the free tyre is genuinely free. And sometimes you've just paid for it three times over without noticing.

Here's how to tell the difference, and how to make sure you're getting the best total price, whoever you buy from.

The maths behind a "free" tyre

Here's the part most people never stop to check: a tyre shop sets its own prices.

There's no national price list that says a tyre has to cost a set amount. So when a shop advertises "buy 3, get the 4th free," there's nothing stopping it from quietly lifting the price of the first three to cover the cost of the fourth.

Quick example of how that works

  • Say a tyre genuinely sells for $200. Four of them = $800.
  • Now a shop marks each tyre up to $270, then "gives away" the fourth.
  • You pay for three at $270 = $810. The fourth is "free."
  • You feel like you saved $270. You actually paid $10 more than the honest price for four.

The discount was real on paper. The saving wasn't. That's the trick. The deal is only as good as the price it's discounting from, and you can't see that starting price.

This is exactly the kind of "inflated price, artificial discount" tactic the ACCC has warned shoppers about across all sorts of retail. Tyres are no different.

When a deal is the real thing

There's one situation where a tyre promotion is genuinely a saving: when the offer comes from the manufacturer, not the shop.

When Goodyear (or another major brand) runs a national promotion, like a cashback or a rebate, that offer is funded by the manufacturer and runs the same way at every store in the country. The shop isn't quietly lifting its prices to pay for it, because the shop isn't the one paying for it. The brand is.

That's the difference:

Shop promotion

The shop sets the prices and the discount. The "saving" can be baked into a marked-up price.

Manufacturer promotion

The maker funds the offer. Same deal everywhere. A real saving.

So the question to ask isn't "how big is the discount?" It's "who's actually paying for it?"

How to read any tyre deal in 30 seconds

Next time you see a tyre offer, ours or anyone's, ask:

  1. What's the out-the-door price for all four? Not per tyre. Not "after the discount." The full total, fitted and balanced, ready to drive away.
  2. Is the offer from the brand or the shop? A manufacturer cashback is a real saving. A shop's own "free tyre" might not be.
  3. What's included? Fitting, balancing, new valves, old-tyre disposal: these add up. A cheap headline price with everything bolted on top isn't cheap.

Get the total, on those terms, and you can compare any two deals honestly.

What we do differently

We don't do smoke and mirrors. No inflated sticker price so we can "discount" it back to normal and call it a special.

We quote you a straight, sharp out-the-door price: tyres, fitting, balancing, the lot. And we back it with the Goodyear name and a workshop that's been on the same Blacktown corner since 1959.

Seen a "3 for 4" or any tyre deal somewhere else? Call us with it. Even if we're not running that exact offer, bring us the quote and we'll work to beat the total price. We'll compare like-for-like: same tyre, same size, everything included. No inflated starting price to see through. Just a better number.

FAQs

Is "buy 3 get the 4th free" a good deal?
It can be, but only if the price of the first three hasn't been lifted to pay for the fourth. Always ask for the out-the-door total for all four tyres and compare it against a straight four-tyre quote.
How do I know if a tyre promotion is genuine?
Ask who's funding it. A manufacturer promotion (like a Goodyear national cashback) is funded by the brand and is the same at every store. That's a real saving. A shop's own "free tyre" offer is set by that shop, and the discount can be hidden in the starting price.
Will you match or beat another shop's tyre deal?
Call us with the quote and we'll work to beat the total price, comparing like-for-like: same tyre, same size, with fitting, balancing and disposal all included. Bring us the real number and we'll do our best to land under it.
What's included in your tyre prices?
We quote you the full out-the-door price: fitting, balancing, valves and old-tyre disposal. The number you're told is the number you pay. No surprises at the counter.
Do you stock more than Goodyear tyres?
Yes. We'll fit and supply a range of brands and budgets. Tell us your car and how you drive, and we'll point you to the right tyre, not just the dearest one.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I service my car?

Most modern cars need a service every 10,000–15,000 km or 12 months, whichever comes first. Your logbook sets the exact interval and we service to it, keeping your manufacturer warranty intact.

Do you service all vehicle makes and models?

Yes, all makes and models including European vehicles (BMW, Mercedes, Volkswagen). Passenger cars, SUVs, 4WDs, utes and vans.

Can I book my service online?

Yes, two ways. Use our Book Online page for servicing, pink slips, wheel alignments, rotations and tyre health checks, or chat with our virtual assistant right here on the site and it will help arrange your booking. For tyres and mechanical repairs, the assistant can point you in the right direction, or call (02) 9622 5511.

Not sure what your car actually needs?

That's what we're here for. Chat with our virtual assistant on this page: describe the symptom, the warning light, or what another workshop told you, and it will help you work out what's worth looking at, with honest answers from our own service information. Prefer a person? Call (02) 9622 5511, or drop in for a free assessment and we'll look at the car before anything is quoted.

Do you offer same-day tyre fitting?

Often, yes. Fitting takes 30–60 minutes and popular sizes are in stock or ordered in quickly. Call (02) 9622 5511 with your tyre size to lock in same-day fitting.

Which tyre brands do you stock?

Goodyear, Dunlop, Continental, Pirelli, Kumho, Maxxis and Hifly, plus quality budget brands. Search by brand, size or vehicle.

Do you do mechanical repairs, or just tyres?

We're a full mechanical workshop, not just a tyre shop. Engine repairs, suspension and steering, cooling systems, clutches, exhausts, computer diagnostics and general servicing, for all makes and models.

Can you service a new car without voiding its warranty?

Yes. Our logbook servicing follows the manufacturer's schedule and uses compliant parts and fluids, so your new-car warranty stays intact. We stamp the logbook and provide a detailed report.
